White House locked down for an hour

The White House was locked down for nearly an hour on the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, after a man hopped over the fence on the northern side of the complex.

According to a Secret Service spokesman, the man was “immediately apprehended and taken into custody.”

{mosads}TV footage of the incident showed armed Secret Service agents immediately swarming and detaining the man, who appeared to be holding a stuffed animal. A Secret Service canine unit was also deployed to investigate the incident.

The lockdown capped a skittish day at government buildings around the capital on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

U.S. Capitol Police shut down roads near the Capitol building earlier Thursday as they investigated two unattended bags — a suitcase and a satchel — discovered near the building.
