Majority back Supreme Court on gay marriage

A majority of Americans are behind the Supreme Court’s decision to allow gay marriages in several states, according to a new poll.

A poll conducted by ABC News and the Washington Post found that 56 percent of people in the U.S. support the high court’s ruling to allow gay marriage, including a majority in the 11 states affected by it.

{mosads}Out of those surveyed, 38 percent oppose the decision.

By deciding to hear a number of appeals, the Supreme Court cleared the path for gay marriage in Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Shortly after, three other cases in Colorado, North Carolina, and West Virginia came forward in the same jurisdictions.

Gay marriage bans were rejected by other courts this past week in the additional three states of Idaho, Nevada and Alaska.

Americans are divided, however, 48-44 percent on supporting or opposing the court’s action in the 20 states where gay marriage is currently banned.
