‘Sesame Street’ parodies ‘House of Cards’
“Sesame Street” is getting in on the House of Cards fun with a new parody video released four days before the Netflix show’s season premiere.
The play on the “Three Little Pigs” nursery rhyme stars Frank Underwolf working to blow down three houses that look suspiciously like the homes to the three branches of government. Each of the houses are owned by pigs, as per the nursery rhyme, allowing the wolf to make political puns.
“Some people say there’s too much pork in this town,” Underwolf says.
“I could not agree more.”
{mosads}But when Underwolf makes it to the White House, the pigs blow the house down, and it crumbles into debris made up of playing cards.
The Netflix show chronicles House Majority Whip Frank Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, climbing the political ladder on a quest to become president of the United States. The show’s new season will be released on Netflix Friday morning.
Lawmakers are big fans of the series, and even re-enacted their own version of the show for NowThisNews ahead of last season’s premiere, starring then-House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and Reps. James Clyburn (D-S.C.), Donna Edwards (D-Md.), Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) and Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), among others.
“Sesame Street’s” parody is complete with quiet allusions to the show and potential spoilers for those who haven’t watched, including Underwood frequently making comments to the audience and graphics that show text messages the characters send to each other.
This isn’t the first time “Sesame Street” has waded into parodies aimed at both adults and children. Previous installments include parodies of Showtime’s “Homeland,” PBS’s “Downton Abbey,” and movies including “Harry Potter” and “Star Wars.”
