Clinton van idles in handicap spot
Republicans tweaked Hillary Clinton on Thursday after her van appeared to be left idling in a handicap area during a stop in Iowa.
Video captured by local ABC affiliate KETV, based in Omaha, Neb., shows Clinton leaving a cafe in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and entering the black GMC van, nicknamed “Scooby.”
{mosads}A street parking meter near the front of the vehicle indicates the area is reserved for handicapped parking.
“Woman of the people!!” Republican National Committee (RNC) research director Raj Shah tweeted, including a photo of Clinton near the van.
“Don’t ever remember Shaggy, Fred or Daphne parking the #ScoobyVan in a handicap space,” RNC communications director Sean Spicer tweeted, naming characters from the animated TV series “The Scooby-Doo Show.”
The Secret Service typically handles the driving for Clinton, who said last year she hasn’t driven since 1996, midway through her husband’s time in the Oval Office.
“This car was never parked here and you can see that from the fact that the video includes break lights,” a Clinton campaign aide told The Hill.
“There was an agent driving the car — as there always is — and they were out front for entrance and exit. During the event, the van pulled forward to a parking spot,” the aide added.
Parking in a handicap-designated space without a disabled person driving or riding in a vehicle can result in a $200 fine, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.
Before she stepped into the backseat of the van, Clinton was seen posing for a few photos when exiting the cafe, where she met with local Democratic Party leaders, according to KETV.
Pottawattamie County Democratic Chairwoman Linda Nelson said those invited to the private meeting were asked to turn over their cellphones and cameras, KETV reported.
Clinton wrapped up her road trip to Iowa on Thursday and will make her first campaign swing through the next early-voting state of New Hampshire early next week.
