Sunday shows preview: Breaking down Baltimore
Baltimore’s civil unrest will dominate the morning news landscape Sunday.
All five major networks will feature analysis of Friday’s ruling that Freddie Gray’s death while in police custody was a homicide.
A chorus of prominent lawmakers will debate the fallout from that decision during their Sunday show appearances.
{mosads}House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) leads the charge with a major interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where he will share his thoughts on the Gray case with host Chuck Todd.
In interview excerpts released Friday, Boehner said he believes there is a national crisis over the relationship between blacks and law enforcement.
“I think that if you look at what’s happened in the course of the last year, you just have to scratch your head,” he said.
Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) will also speak with Todd about the troubled city. The tensions in Baltimore come as O’Malley considers a potential 2016 Democratic presidential campaign.
ABC News’s “This Week,” meanwhile, features two of the most recognizable black lawmakers in Congress.
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) will each share their perspective on Gray and the six police officers now facing criminal charges over his death.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will play a prominent role on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” Cornell Williams Brooks, the organization’s president, will speak with host Bob Schieffer, while Sherrilyn Ifill, the director of the group’s Legal Defense and Educational fund, will participate in the show’s weekly roundtable.
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) rounds out CBS’s lineup. The Wisconsin lawmaker will weigh in on poverty reform and urban growth in relation to Baltimore’s troubles.
CNN’s “State of the Union” will greet Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) to discuss the turmoil in his state. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter (D) and Birmingham Mayor William Bell (D) will also discuss the matter with host Jake Tapper.
“Fox News Sunday” will get its own Maryland lawmaker with a stop from Rep. Donna Edwards (D).
Edwards and Van Hollen will face off in a primary as they both run to replace the retiring Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.).
Host Chris Wallace will also welcome Gov. John Kasich (R-Ohio) as he continues making the case for his potential 2016 Oval Office bid for Republicans.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will also visit ABC following his announced White House bid earlier this week. The 2016 hopeful will discuss his campaign with host George Stephanopoulos.
