Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a likely presidential candidate, touted his conservative record in a speech Saturday.
“We didn’t just win an election, we transformed the state,” Walker told the Wisconsin Republican Party, according to the Associated Press.
“We took the power away from the big government special interests and put it back in the hands of the hardworking taxpayers.”
{mosads}He discussed the initiatives that made him famous nationally, including breaking the collective bargaining rights of public sector unions, passing voter ID legislation and slashing taxes.
He did not mention his own presidential aspirations, the AP reported, but did urge Republicans present to help Wisconsin elect a member of the GOP in 2016. The state has gone blue in recent presidential elections.
But he did not delve in foreign policy, even though he just returned from a trip to Israel.
International affairs are seen as a weak spot for the conservative governor. At a major conservative conference earlier this year, he compared fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria with battling unions in his home state.
The statement brought him mockery, with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) tweeting at the time, “If Scott Walker sees 100,000 teachers & firefighters as his enemies, maybe it’s time we take a closer look at his friends.”
In an effort to burnish his foreign policy credentials, Walker has been making trips to foreign countries — including a trade mission to Europe last month.
