Waiting game begins with Supreme Court

The waiting game for two major decisions from the Supreme Court has begun.

The high court did not release decisions in the two biggest cases of the term on Monday, leaving the fate of same-sex marriage bans and federal health insurance subsidies under ObamaCare up in the air.

{mosads}A ruling in those two cases could come any day the justices convene to issue opinions, with the court’s term expected to wrap up by the end of June.

The court on Monday added another opinion day on June 18 to accommodate the swelling number of cases that have yet to be decided. For now, there are four more days left on the court’s calendar — June 18, June 22, June 25 and June 29.

While the political world is awaiting word on the gay marriage and ObamaCare cases, there are a slew of other important opinions on the way. They include whether Oklahoma’s current lethal injection cocktail amounts to cruel and unusual punishment, and whether Arizona’s congressional map is constitutional.

The court typically waits until the last few days of its term to announce major decisions.

The court’s 2012 decision upholding the Affordable Care Act, its 2013 decision overruling pieces of the Voting Rights Act, and its 2014 decision allowing Hobby Lobby and other closely-held companies to disregard the healthcare law’s contraceptive mandate were all announced during the last two days of the term.
