Sunday shows preview: Trying to understand Charleston
News networks on Sunday will try making sense of this week’s mass shooting at a church in Charleston, S.C.
Nine people died Wednesday evening when a gunman opened fire on Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Sunday’s talk shows will explore the tragedy and its aftermath, including the arrest of Dylann Storm Roof, the alleged shooter.

ABC’s “This Week”: Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley (R) leads ABC’s coverage Sunday with his perspective on the massacre that hit his city earlier this week.
After that, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) speaks with host George Stephanopoulos.
Santorum, a 2016 GOP presidential candidate, will comment on Pope Francis’ controversial encyclical on climate change released Thursday.
He will discuss Francis’ missive and his thoughts on its contents as a Catholic.
NBC’s “Meet the Press”: Host Chuck Todd welcomes Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) for his thoughts on the Charleston shooting.
The South Carolina lawmaker will explain how the deadly event has impacted his state’s constituents.
Also appearing is former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, another GOP White House hopeful next election cycle.
Huckabee, a former Baptist minister, will talk about Charleston’s loss and its effect on gun control efforts going forward.
CBS’s “Face the Nation”: CBS zeroes in on its own analysis of Charleston by welcoming Cornell William Brooks, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
Brooks will discuss the shooting’s impact on race relations nationwide, after reports that Roof allegedly uttered racial epithets before opening fire on black congregants Wednesday night.
Also appearing is Sherrilyn Ifill, the president and director-counsel of the NAACP’s Legal Defense and Educational Fund, explaining the possible hate crime implications of Wednesday’s attack.
Mary Ellen O’Toole, meanwhile, will offer her insight as a former senior FBI profiler on Roof’s possible motivations and behavior as the alleged shooter.
Host John Dickerson then greets Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), who will discuss the tragedy as both a conservative and a Southerner.
Riley will also appear on “Face the Nation” to talk Charleston.
The show will also look at foreign affairs with Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.).
The House Intelligence Committee chairman will discuss the latest developments in America’s ongoing overseas fight with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
“Fox News Sunday”: Host Chris Wallace sits down with former Texas Gov. Rick Perry to talk about his second presidential campaign.
The 2016 contender will explain how his campaign strategy differs from his unsuccessful 2012 bid.
Wallace then welcomes Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the Catholic archbishop of Washington, D.C.
Wuerl will analyze the pope’s report on climate change earlier this week and how the church is participating in debates over the issue going forward.
Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.), meanwhile, plans on participating in the “Fox News Sunday” debate panel.
CNN’s “State of the Union”: Host Jake Tapper will conduct an exclusive interview with New York business mogul Donald Trump.
