Sunday shows preview: No holiday for 2016 field
The crowded 2016 presidential field takes no respite from the campaign trail for Independence Day weekend.
Sunday’s news shows will feature multiple contenders making their case for voters following July Fourth celebrations.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie leads the charge with an appearance on “Fox News Sunday” after formally launching an Oval Office bid earlier this week.
{mosads}Christie began his quest for the White House on Tuesday from his old high school in Livingston, N.J.
Here is the list of Sunday morning’s expected guests wrapping up the holiday weekend:
“Fox News Sunday”: Christie chats with host Shannon Bream about his entry into the packed race for the Republican nomination earlier this week.
He plans on discussing his standing in one of the most crowded GOP fields in recent memory, now at 14 official competitors.
Bream will then discuss last week’s legalization of same-sex marriage nationwide with experts from each side of the debate.
Kelly Shackleford, president and CEO of the Liberty Institute, and Evan Wolfson, founder of Freedom to Marry, will discuss what the landmark ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges means for both the faith and gay communities.
CNN’s “State of the Union”: CNN will shine a spotlight on one presidential candidate from each political party Sunday.
Host Jake Tapper welcomes Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who will discuss his underdog bid to topple Democratic leader Hillary Clinton.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is representing the GOP on CNN’s programming this weekend.
ABC’s “This Week”: Host George Stephanopoulos greets former Texas Gov. Rick Perry during ABC’s broadcast Sunday.
Perry will give his thoughts on last week’s news and continue making his case for the GOP nomination next year.
Stephanopoulos then hosts a bipartisan pair of lawmakers giving their thoughts on the final negotiations over Iran’s nuclear arms research.
Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.) plan on visiting ABC’s studios and discussing the tentative pact.
Cotton, a noted critic of the talks, authored an open letter to Iranian leadership earlier this year vowing that Congress could undo any deal it finds unsatisfactory.
Cardin, meanwhile, is the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Also appearing are Reps. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) and Tom Cole (R-Okla.).
CBS’s “Face the Nation”: Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) is the sole White House hopeful scheduled for CBS on Sunday.
Santorum will give his thoughts on the Supreme Court and its role in last week’s historic gay marriage decision.
Sen. Bob Corker (R-Texas) then plans on discussing the Iran talks with host John Dickerson.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman will weigh in on the negotiations and what role Congress has in them before next week’s final deadline.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) is the last planned CBS guest. She will talk about President Obama’s decision last week to reopen a U.S. embassy in Cuba.
Klobuchar, an advocate for restored diplomacy between both nations, will also discuss her work on ending the trade embargo on Havana.
NBC’s “Meet the Press”: Host Chuck Todd sits down with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for an extensive interview.
Cruz will promote his new book, “A Time for Truth: Reigniting the Miracle of America” during his appearance on NBC.
The Texas lawmaker will lay out his vision for a conservative America and where he stands on the 2016 campaign trail.
