Trial date set for Charleston shooting suspect
The suspect in a mass shooting at a church last month appeared in court Thursday in Charleston S.C., where a judge set his trial to begin July 11, 2016, according to multiple local reports.
{mosads}Dylann Storm Roof faces nine counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and a weapons charge in the shooting at Emanuel AME Church.
His attorney told the judge that Roof, who appeared in court wearing a jail inmate jumpsuit, appears to be competent to stand trial, according to multiple reports.
The judge reportedly said a gag order would be lifted if interested parties, such as attorneys, law enforcement officials or victims’ family members, did not file motions by next Wednesday.
The judge in the case issued an order last week that 911 calls, coroner reports and witness statements not be released, according to The Associated Press, one of several media outlets challenging the ruling. The judge had reportedly questioned whether the release would hinder a fair trial.
Two law enforcement officials had told CNN that Roof confessed to the shooting and said he wanted to provoke a race war. NBC News also reported Roof told investigators of his “mission.”
