Sen. Durbin will wait until next year before decision on running again
{mosads}If Durbin decided not to run for reelection, it would end a congressional career that began with him winning Illinois’s 20th congressional seat in 1982. Durbin was first elected to the Senate in 1996 and was reelected twice.
Durbin’s retirement would also create a major leadership change in the Senate: Durbin is the second highest-ranking Democrat in the chamber.
The senator said that consideration about whether he would run again would begin with a conversation with his wife, the Chicago newspaper reported.
“That’s where the conversation starts, and it’s where it should start. I’ve been lucky enough to serve, been lucky enough to reach an important part of leadership in the Senate, and what a great state to serve,” Durbin said. “But my juices are flowing. I love this business, and I love this state, and I’ll match my schedule with any elected official in our state.”
