Navy reports shooting at facility in Chattanooga

The Navy has confirmed reports of a shooting at one of its facilities in Chattanooga, Tenn.

“#USNavy confirms shooting at building on Amnicola Highway,” the Navy tweeted.

The military branch initially said on Thursday there was no shooting at that location.

The service said it is also probing reports of a shooting at a second facility, a Navy recruiting building in Chattanooga.

{mosads}“Investigating report of shooting at Navy recruiting building on Lee Highway,” it tweeted. “More to follow.”

NBC’s local affiliate reported Thursday that there was an officer-involved shooting at the U.S. Naval Reserve in Chattanooga. One police officer has reportedly been shot, with the possibility of other victims.

Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke (D) left a press conference early upon hearing about the incident. He then took to his Twitter account, expressing dismay over the situation.

“Horrific incident in our community,” Berke tweeted. “We will release details as they are confirmed. Prayers to all those affected.”

NBC’s local affiliate said that police have set up a command post near the scene. It is considered an active shooter situation.

The news outlet additionally reported that Chattanooga State University’s campus was locked down as precaution.

Erlanger Health System was also shut down, NBC added, with multiple police and ambulances outside the emergency room.

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) echoed Berke’s tone in a statement issued Thursday afternoon.

“I am deeply disturbed by reports of a violent attack in Chattanooga,” Alexander said. “I have been in touch with federal, state and local officials and will monitor the situation closely,” he said. “My thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) also weighed in on the incident in a press release of his own.

“I am heartbroken by the tragic shootings that have taken place in my hometown,” he said. “This is a difficult day for Tennesseans and our thoughts and prayers are with all affected by this tragedy.”

President Obama has been briefed by his national security staff on the Chattanooga shooting and will continue to receive updates, according to White House spokesman Eric Schultz.
