Obama pushes Iran deal in ‘Daily Show’ appearance
President Obama pushed back at the critics of the Iran nuclear deal during an interview on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” on Tuesday, invoking former Vice President Dick Cheney.
“We have taken off the table what would be a catastrophic problem if they got a weapon,” Obama said in an interview set to air Tuesday night.
{mosads}The president said he was surprised that critics of the deal seem to believe America didn’t negotiate a strong enough deal. He joked that detractors are acting as though if the U.S “had brought Dick Cheney to the negotiations, everything would be fine.”
Cheney, former President George W. Bush’s vice president and the former secretary of Defense, has a hawkish military reputation.
Obama has been using a variety of methods to tout the Iranian deal, which imposes further limits on the country’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting international sanctions, hoping to reach a wide audience.
He’s defended it to reporters at the White House, veterans at an appearance at the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention, and now a younger audience on Stewart’s comedy news show.
The president joked about Stewart’s eminent departure and said that he would “issue an executive order” to keep him as the host of “The Daily Show.”
He added that before he leaves office, he wants to make more progress on convincing China and India to help address climate change and fuel-efficiency standards.
