It took place on a busy street; most of the bombing’s casualties were Afghan citizens.
The contractors who were killed worked for DynCorp International, a private military contractor and security firm.

The company extends its thoughts and prayers to all involved and to their families and loved ones,” the company said in a statement. “Out of respect for their privacy, we will not be providing additional information at this time.”
This has been a violent year for Afghans, with more than 5,000 civilian casualties so far. It could end up being the most violent since 2001, when the fighting in the country began.
