Supporters rally for Kim Davis in Kentucky
Supporters gathered outside of a jail in Kentucky on Saturday to show their support for Kim Davis, a county clerk who was taken into custody earlier this week for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
Roughly 500 people rallied outside the jail, according to Reuters, with some supporters placing a white banner near the entrance of the jail that read “Kim Davis POW.”
{mosads}Davis was taken into custody Thursday after being held in contempt of court. Her lawyers are planning to appeal the order.
“God is going to continue to bless Kim Davis,” George Steele, the mayor of Grayson, Ky., told supporters at the rally, according to Reuters.
Davis, who citing her Christian beliefs in her refusal to issue the marriage licenses, has attracted national attention and the support of Republican presidential candidates, including Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.) and Marco Rubio (Fla.).
Deputy clerks issued at least four same-sex marriage licenses after Davis was taken into custody, though Mat Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel, told Reuters that they are likely invalid because Davis didn’t approve them.
The Supreme Court ruled earlier this year in a 5-4 case that same-sex couples cannot be denied marriage licenses under the 14th Amendment.
