Mexican TV uses Trump to hype US-Mexico soccer game
GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign rhetoric on foreign relations is being used on Mexican television to hype a soccer game between the U.S. and Mexico.
The TV Azteca ad shows footage of Mexican soccer stars mixed with clips from Trump press conferences. “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best – they’re not sending you,” the candidate says in the ad.
{mosads}It also shows Trump saying “Our country is in serious trouble – we don’t have victories anymore” as well as “The American dream is dead,” amid footage of the Mexican team scoring several goals on their American counterparts.
The clip is advertising a pivotal Oct. 10 soccer game at the Rose Bowl in California. The winner receives a berth in the 2017 Confederations Cup, a major international tournament held every four years by FIFA, soccer’s governing body.
Trump has become a controversial figure in Mexico since he sharply criticized illegal immigrants and Mexicans during his campaign launch June 16.
“They’re sending people who have a lot of problems,” Trump said during remarks from New York City’s Trump Tower.
“They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists,” he added. “And some, I assume, are good people.”
Trump has since reiterated his positions on illegal immigrants despite losing multiple business partners over the remarks.
He remains the front-runner for the GOP’s 2016 presidential nomination next year across national polls.
