Sunday shows preview: GOP preps for second debate
Republican presidential candidates will look to set the stage for a big showing in the final days before the second GOP primary debate.
Eleven candidates will take the stage at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif., on Wednesday, and five of those are scheduled for appearances on the Sunday show gauntlet.
Businessman Donald Trump headlines – when doesn’t he? – the day’s action with an appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
{mosads}Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, surging in the polls, is the only candidate scheduled to make two appearances, following Trump on the CBS program and headlining ABC’s “This Week.”
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, looking to shake up the race after a recent slide in the polls, will join CNN’s Jake Tapper, who is moderating the second debate, on “State of the Union.”
Ohio Gov. John Kasich will appear on “Fox News Sunday,” and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will round out the day on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Here’s the rest of Sunday’s expected guests across all across all five major shows:
ABC’s “This Week”: Carson will be followed by Global Coalition to Counter ISIS Special Envoy Gen. John Allen, who will talk about how the U.S. can guard against bad actors looking to take advantage of the Syrian refugee crisis.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), one of the House’s most vocal critics of the Iran deal, will also speak with host George Stephanopoulos.
CBS’ “Face the Nation”: Former Obama advisor David Axelrod will try to make sense of the Democratic side of the election.
CBS will also release its latest 2016 Battleground Tracker Poll, which examines how each candidate is fairing in early-voting primary and caucus states.
CNN’s “State of the Union”: Broadcasting from the Reagan Library in anticipation of the second GOP debate, Tapper and company will talk to Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus to gauge his expectations for the debate.
Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, who will take part in the debate’s panel, will join the roundtable at the end of the show.
“Fox News Sunday”: After interviewing Kasich, host Chris Wallace will steer a foreign policy discussion.
Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Chair of the Homeland Security Committee, and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who is on the Foreign Relations Committee, will discuss what role the U.S. should play in the growing Syrian refugee crisis.
NBC’s “Meet the Press”: In addition to Christie, Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will talk about his ascendant campaign with host Chuck Todd.
Deputy Majority Whip Rep. Tom Cole (R-Ok.) will also be on to discuss the House’s recent vote to pass a resolution of disapprove on the Iran deal.
Rounding out the list are former Sen. Jim DeMint, who now heads the conservative Heritage Foundation, and former U.S. Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford.
