Graham: ‘The next 9/11’ is likely coming from Syria

The next major terrorist attack against the United States will likely be hatched in Syria, GOP presidential candidate Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said on Wednesday.

Graham, who has repeatedly criticized the Obama administration for lacking a strategy for Syria’s civil war, argued unrest in that country is providing a safe haven for terrorists.

{mosads}He also said Russia’s support for Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime will ensure that war will continue, affecting the entire region.

“It affects Lebanon, Jordan and the next 9/11 is most likely to come from Syria,” the South Carolina lawmaker said in an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“The worst is yet to come,” he said.  “With Russia supporting Assad, it means he just doesn’t go.  It means that the radical Sunni Islamists will have a great recruiting opportunity.”

The South Carolina senator has made foreign policy – particularly regarding the Middle East – a key selling point of his long-shot bid for next year’s Republican presidential nomination.

But Graham is trailing badly in polls, and is not winning even an average of 1 percent support in the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls.
