Sunday shows preview: Outsider candidate for Speaker to state his case

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) will get a prime opportunity Sunday to make a name for himself as he bids to become the next Speaker of the House.

The four-term congressman will make an appearance on “Fox News Sunday.” It comes as Chaffetz positions himself as the anti-establishment choice for Speaker.

{mosads}Chaffetz has recently been critical of House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who is the favorite to succeed Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), for linking the Benghazi Special Committee to Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton’s sliding poll numbers, suggesting a partisan motivation for the investigation into the 2012 terrorist attack.

GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump will also make two appearances Sunday, as he looks to maintain his lead in the Republican race.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) is the only other presidential candidate scheduled to make an appearance on the day.

Topics of conversation include the latest in the Syria crisis and the aftermath of the shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon.

Here are the line-ups across the five major networks:

ABC’s “This Week”: In a pre-taped interview, Trump will talk about the Oregon community college shooting that left 9 dead and 7 injured Thursday.

Christie and Fox News host Bill O’Reilly follow on the program.

CNN’s “State of the Union”: Host Jake Tapper will be joined by co-founder of Americans for Responsible Solutions, Mark Kelly. Kelly is the husband of former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head in 2011.

A pair of high-profile senators, Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), will follow.

“Fox News Sunday”: Chaffetz headlines the program to talk about his play for the House’s top job.

A discussion on foreign policy will follow, as host Chris Wallace is joined by retired four-star general Jack Keane and career diplomat Ryan Crocker, who has served as the U.S. ambassador to Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

NBC’s “Meet the Press”: Host Chuck Todd will also get a chance at GOP front-runner Trump, and the network will release its latest NBC News/WSJ polls from Iowa and New Hampshire.

Former U.S. ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul and former White House national security advisor Stephen Hadley will also join the program.

CBS’s “Face the Nation”: Will not air due to the NFL game in London between the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins.
