University of Chicago cancels classes due to threat

The University of Chicago has canceled classes at its main campus Monday after being notified by the FBI of an online threat of gun violence, the school said in a statement.

The school said it was cancelling all classes and activities at its Hyde Park campus through midnight Monday after the FBI’s threat assessment and “recent tragic events” at other schools in the country.

{mosads}”University security personnel are keeping in close contact with the FBI, which is continuing to investigate the threat,” Robert Zimmer, the university’s president, said in the statement.

Students, faculty and non-essential staff were asked to stay away from the Hyde Park campus while students in on-campus housing were instructed to stay indoors.

The canceled classes and events, which reportedly affect more than 30,000 people, come after several recent school shootings including last month at a community college in Roseburg, Ore., where a gunman killed nine people.
