Report: Justice to probe Chicago police

The Justice Department reportedly plans to open an investigation into the Chicago Police Department.

The Washington Post reported Sunday that the federal government will be examining the department in a “wide-ranging” civil probe similar to what it undertook in Ferguson, Mo., and Baltimore — two other cities that saw police officers’ actions against black civilians come into question.

{mosads}Chicago is the latest city to face such scrutiny, after an officer was charged with murder over the shooting death of Laquan McDonald. The city’s police chief resigned after video of the shooting was made public, and the city has seen several protests in response.

The city’s mayor, Rahm Emanuel, served as President Obama’s first chief of staff. Some have called for him to step down, accusing him of delaying the video’s release until after his reelection.
