NRA: Obama lacks respect for Second Amendment

After getting slammed by President Obama for refusing to attend his town hall on gun control Thursday night, the National Rifle Association (NRA) says the president lacks “a basic level of respect” for the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms.

{mosads}The NRA, which turned down an invitation to attend the town hall, live-tweeted the event, offering a series of rebuttals to the president’s policy proposals.

“It’s true: None of the president’s orders would have stopped any of the recent mass shootings #GunsInAmerica,” the NRA said in one tweet, referring to the executive action undertaken by Obama to close the gun-show loophole.

NRA chief lobbyist Chris Cox also appeared on Fox News’s “The Kelly File” during the president’s forum and defended the group’s decision not to attend.

“What are we going to talk about, basketball?” he said. “I am not interested in going over and talking to the president, who doesn’t have a basic level of respect or understanding of the Second Amendment and law-abiding gun owners in this country.”

He also said the president “doesn’t have a monopoly on compassion” — a response to Obama’s emotional plea for gun reform, which was attended by families from the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre.

“The president doesn’t get to lecture us on loving our kids,” he said.

The town hall, hosted at George Mason University’s Johnson Center and televised by CNN, featured both gun control and gun rights advocates.

The NRA tweeted after the event that Obama “doesn’t want an intellectually honest policy discussion.”

“He wants #NRA to be an audience member at his PR stunt. No thanks,” the group added.
