Poll: 13 percent approve of Congress

Only 13 percent of Americans approve of the job Congress is performing on their behalf, according to a Gallup survey released Wednesday that showed little discernible change.

{mosads}Approval of Congress has been hovering between 11 percent and 16 percent since August and has only hit 20 percent or higher three times since 2012, Gallup said. Congressional approval has averaged about 32 percent since the firm began analyzing the subject in 1974.

The record low of 9 percent occurred in November 2013 following a federal government shutdown, and the record high of 84 percent was seen in 2001 after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Gallup said that President Obama’s tenure has typically featured congressional approval ratings near historic lows.

Gallup conducted its latest poll of 1,019 adult Americans nationwide via cellphone and landline telephone interviews from March 2 to 6. It has a 4 percent margin of error.
