Kerry makes surprise stop in Afghanistan

Secretary of State John Kerry made a surprise trip to Afghanistan on Saturday to meet with the country’s leaders and make the case for peace talks with the Taliban, according to CNN.

Kerry will co-host the U.S. Afghanistan Bilateral Commission, along with Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani, to review the country’s progress since the formation of the unity government in 2014.

{mosads}He will also meet with AfghanPresident Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, the two leaders who share power under the unity agreement and who have been in disagreement over key appointments.

The visit comes a day after Kerry made an unannounced stop in Iraq to spur government leaders in their fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
