Chirlane McCray, the wife of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, said Thursday she thinks Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is getting “desperate.”
“I think the tone will be respectful,” she said on CNN ahead of the Democratic debate scheduled for Thursday evening. “But I think that Bernie’s getting a little desperate, so I expect that we’ll hear the volume pumped up a little bit.”
{mosads}McCray, who supports Hillary Clinton, praised the front-runner.
“Hillary’s a great candidate. She’s battle-tested,” she said.
“I expect that they’re really going to be addressing some serious issues tonight,” she added.
She said in response to a question about a Sanders rally Wednesday night that attracted 27,000 people that she doesn’t see an “enthusiasm gap” between the former secretary of State and the Vermont senator.
“I’m really happy to see this enthusiasm and all the support from all those people. It just shows that people are engaged, they’re involved,” she said.
She said Clinton is doing “very well.”
“She’s got a bold vision and people are really ready to support her,” she said.
Clinton holds a 13-point lead over Sanders in the RealClearPolitics average of polls five days before voters cast ballots in New York.
