DNC chairwoman agrees with Sanders on ‘obscene’ amount of money in politics
Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Sunday said she agrees that there is an “obscene” amount of money in politics.
{mosads}”Absolutely,” the Florida Democrat said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” in response to a question about whether she believes what Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said about there being too much money in politics.
“We agree as a party that there is an obscene amount of money in politics.
“We need to make sure that we can keep elections that — like we did with changing congressional districting and redistricting across the country — that voters can choose their representatives and that we don’t have outside undue influence come in and swoop in and, uh, make decisions on behalf of the majority of voters,” she said, pointing to a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United, the 2010 Supreme Court decision that removed federal restrictions on campaign contribution limits.
Actor George Clooney, a major fundraiser for Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton, also called the amount of money that goes into presidential campaigns “ridiculous” and “obscene.”
