NBA head: ‘Problematic’ to keep All-Star game in NC with anti-LGBT law
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league’s All-Star game may be pulled from North Carolina after the state’s governor signed a controversial law that LGBT advocates argue is discriminatory.
“We’ve been working very closely with the business community down there and the governor and the legislatures to make it clear that it would be problematic for us to move forward with our All-Star game if there is not a change in the law,” Silver said Thursday on ESPN’s “Mike & Mike” radio show.
{mosads}The law in question prevents local municipalities from passing protections against discrimination of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and requires people use public bathrooms that correspond to their biological sex as listed on their birth certificate.
Several entertainment acts have already canceled appearances in North Carolina in protest including Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen and Cirque du Soleil.
“I believe they’re going to do the right thing,” Silver said. “And I think they’re heard loud and clearly from the NBA.”
