Ex-Rubio aide ‘torn’ about voting for Trump

A former top aide to Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said Thursday he is struggling with the decision about whether to support presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump this fall.

“I’m legitimately torn about who I will vote for this fall,” Alex Conant, who served as the Rubio campaign’s communications director, said on CNN’s “At This Hour.”

{mosads}”Donald Trump hasn’t earned my vote yet,” he added. “Like many conservatives, I’m torn about it. We’ll see how things play out over the coming months.”

Rubio himself has had multiple phone conversations with Trump since dropping out of the race in mid-March, sources told The New York Times for a report on Wednesday. Conant declined to verify the report, emphasizing he no longer speaks for Rubio, but praised Trump’s efforts to reach out to former rivals.

“If the report is true I think it’s good Trump is reaching out to Republicans like Marco Rubio, because he needs to unite the Republican Party,” Conant said.

Conant insisted that he thinks Rubio is “very focused on being a senator right now,” mentioning his work on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“I think he wants to make sure [Democratic front-runner] Hillary Clinton is not elected president, absolutely,” Conant said.
