Activist Al Sharpton says Hillary Clinton needs to prepare for a “street fight” with Donald Trump in the general election.
“She’s either gotta toughen up or have tougher surrogates that can resonate with her base,” Sharpton said Wednesday of the Democratic front-runner on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
{mosads}”She’s coming in like this is a boxing match,” Sharpton said. “This is a street fight. [Trump has] got a broken Coca-Cola bottle and a razor. You can’t come in with gloves waiting on the referee to fight Donald Trump.”
Sharpton was echoing similar comments he made to The New York Times last week in a report where a Clinton spokeswoman defended the campaign’s approach to Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
“We hear from friends who think we should act more like Trump or criticize us for sometimes using traditional communications tactics,” the spokeswoman said. “But we don’t think that’s the answer.”
Sharpton on Wednesday pointed to Trump’s attacks on the media the previous day.
“Trump is a bully,” Sharpton said, adding that someone should “call his bluff.”
