Rubio: ‘I may not be asked to speak’ at GOP convention

Marco Rubio says he isn’t sure he’ll be asked to speak at the Republican National Convention next month, adding that he would not be willing to speak on behalf of Donald Trump.

“I may not be asked to speak, but if I am at a convention or any Republican gathering for that matter, what I would communicate is the things I believe in,” Rubio told Roll Call on Monday.

{mosads}Rubio said that no one has reached out to him about potentially speaking at the convention in late July, where Trump will officially be declared the party’s nominee.

Rubio said his policy vision is in some cases “substantially different from what Donald is offering, and that’s why I’m not sure I’m going to be asked to speak at the convention.”

“I’ve never said I would stand and speak on behalf of someone else’s agenda,” Rubio said. “I would speak about the things I believe in, not somebody else’s platform or on behalf of anyone else, for that matter.”

Rubio, who ended his own presidential bid in March, indicated last month that he’d speak on Trump’s behalf at the convention if asked.

“Yeah,” Rubio responded in his interview with CNN. “I want to be helpful. I don’t want to be harmful because I don’t want Hillary Clinton to be president.”

The Florida senator has joined other top Republicans in recent days slamming Trump for going after the Mexican heritage of an Indiana-born federal judge presiding over lawsuits against Trump University.

Republicans leaders have condemned as racist Trump’s comments that the judge’s heritage represents a conflict of interest, given the businessman’s proposal to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico.
