Obama in Florida for golf getaway

President Obama is in Florida until Monday to golf and lounge with friends.

Obama is staying at the Floridian Yacht and Golf Club in Palm City, Fla., while first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia are “out West” on a ski trip.

{mosads}Josh Earnest, a White House spokesman, said the president has no plans to leave the golf club on Saturday, according to a pool report.

Earnest said Obama played with departing U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, Dr. Eric Whitaker, a longtime friend of Obama’s from Chicago, Tony Chase, an Obama fundraiser, Houston Astros owner Jim Crane, who also owns the golf resort, and CenterPoint Energy Chairman Milton Carroll, an Obama donor.

Butch Harmon, a former coach of Tiger Woods, accompanied the group and provided tips, Earnest added.

Reporters are not expected to see Obama for the entire weekend, according to the pool report.

The Associated Press reports a solo vacation is not uncommon for presidents.

Former President Harry Truman was fond of stealing away to Key West, Fla., with all male aides joining him. And Franklin D. Roosevelt spent many solitary nights at his Warm Springs, Ga., cottage.

It also isn’t Obama’s first trip away from the family, according to the news service.

Obama, along with family dog Bo, headed back to Chicago in 2010 for his 49th birthday. Sasha was accompanying the first lady on a trip to Spain, and Malia was at camp.

To celebrate, Obama had dinner with friends, with Oprah Winfrey, longtime friend Eric Whitaker and White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett all seated at the table.
