Gallup: Less than half OK with treatment of immigrants

Less than half of U.S. adults like how the nation’s immigration population is treated, according to a Gallup survey released Thursday.

{mosads}Forty-three percent are “very or somewhat satisfied” with America’s treatment of immigrants, down 1 point from last year.

Americans also are unhappy with how Arabs are treated in the United States, with 45 percent saying they are “very or somewhat satisfied” with the group’s treatment, a 4-point drop from 2015.

The results come from Gallup’s Minority Rights and Relations poll. 

The poll did not find a huge change in how Americans feel immigrants or Arabs are treated in the last year. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has put tough immigration policies at the center of his campaign and has also called for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the country.

At the same time, the poll noted that Arabs and immigrants are the two groups measured by Gallup that are seen as being treated the poorest in American society. 

Pollsters found just over half approve of how American society treats blacks, with 51 percent “very or somewhat satisfied.”

More U.S. adults give that answer than last year, Thursday’s results added, when 49 percent said they approve of their nation’s handling of blacks.

The poll was taken before recent police shootings of black men in Minnesota and Louisiana. 

Americans say they are 54 percent “very or somewhat satisfied” with the country’s handling of Hispanics, down 4 points from last year.

Most approve of its treatment of women, however, with 63 percent giving that answer this year and 64 percent in 2015.

Hillary Clinton on Thursday will accept the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. 

U.S. adults are most satisfied with America’s treatment of Asians, with 75 percent “very or somewhat satisfied, a 2-point decrease since last year.

Gallup conducted its latest sampling of 3,270 U.S. adults via telephone interviews from June 7 to July 1. It has a 3 percentage point margin of error.
