Sanders supporter Tulsi Gabbard will vote for Clinton

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii), one of Bernie Sanders’s top supporters in the Democratic primary, says she’ll vote for Hillary Clinton.

“Given the remaining choices, like Bernie Sanders, I will be casting my vote for Hillary Clinton,” Gabbard told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in a story published Wednesday.

{mosads}“Moving forward, as a veteran and someone who knows firsthand the cost of war, I am going to continue to push for an end to counterproductive interventionist wars and lead our country toward a path toward peace,” Gabbard added.

Gabbard, who served in Iraq, broke with much of the Democratic Party establishment in February to endorse Sanders’s upstart presidential challenge to Clinton.

She stepped down from her post as a vice chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee to back the independent Vermont senator. She was only the fourth member of Congress at the time to endorse him in the Democratic race.

The Hawaii lawmaker was slow to offer her support to Clinton even after she became the presumptive Democratic nominee after the primaries.

In mid-June, Gabbard said she was still “not prepared” to back Clinton. And last week, she formally nominated Sanders at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, where Clinton accepted her party’s nomination.

Gabbard called Sanders’s campaign a movement of “love and compassion.”

Sanders has called on his supporters to back Clinton and prevent Republican nominee Donald Trump from becoming president.
