Cantor: Trump and Clinton ‘very imperfect’

Former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) says he isn’t particularly happy with each major party’s presidential nominee.

In an interview with The Jerusalem Post, Cantor called both Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump “very imperfect.” But he said his support would go to Trump.

{mosads}“This is a race between two candidates now,” he said, “and I will continue to support the Republican candidate.”

Still, Cantor remains concerned about Trump’s unpredictability and about whether the GOP nominee will be a reliable ally for Israel.

“He has been very inconsistent in many of the things that he has said,” Cantor said. “I want to see that clarity as far as Israel is concerned– an America that has its back and is leading. I want to see him say that.

“There’s definitely a clear position that he’s taken against ISIS,” he noted, referring to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Cantor also said the American Jewish community has over the past eight years “seen a president that at times has been openly hostile to the leader of the Jewish state, and has certainly at times crossed a line in its negotiations with the Iran deal.”

The Jewish community’s support for President Obama dropped between his 2008 and 2012 elections, according to The Jerusalem Post.

“I do believe this year presents an opportunity for the Republican Party to make some gains,” Cantor said.

And though he expressed concerns about Trump, Cantor also slammed Clinton, saying that it’s “optimistic” to think the Democratic nominee would provide “four more years of the same on Israel.”

“You have a Democratic Party platform,” he said, “that’s clearly going to have an impact on Hillary.”
