Man who shot Reagan to be released from mental hospital next week

The man who shot Ronald Reagan 35 years ago will be released from a Washington psychiatric hospital next week and will live with his mother in Virginia.

{mosads}John Hinckley Jr. is set to be released to his mother’s home on Sept. 10, his attorney announced Thursday, according to The Associated Press.

A federal judge ruled in July that the 61-year-old was not a danger to himself or others and would be allowed to leave St. Elizabeths Hospital, where he has lived for three decades.

Judge Paul Friedman said that he was a “profoundly troubled 25-year-old young man” but ruled Hinckley’s depression and psychotic disorder were in “full and sustained remission.”

Hinckley shot Reagan in 1981 outside of the Washington Hilton hotel, leaving the former president in recovery at the hospital for almost two weeks.

A court found him not guilty by reason of insanity. He reportedly tried to assassinate Reagan in an attempt to impress actress Jodie Foster, with whom he was obsessed.
