Federal charges filed against NY,NJ bombing suspect

Federal officials have filed charges against Ahmad Khan Rahami following bombings in and around New York this weekend.

The charges include use of weapons of mass destruction, bombing, destruction of property and use of destructive device, according to CNN.

{mosads}The charges were filed by the U.S. attorney’s office for the southern district of New York, the network reported.

Other federal charges were expected to be filed Tuesday evening in New Jersey, according to reports.

Those federal charges are in addition to the five counts of attempted murder of law enforcement announced Monday against Rahami in New Jersey.

The Union County prosecutor’s office said Rahami is also facing second-degree counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose following a confrontation with police in Linden, N.J., on Monday.

Authorities took custody of the 28-year-old, but Rahami and at least one officer sustained injuries.

Investigators have combed the suspect’s background after linking him to a bomb that exploded in the Chelsea neighborhood in New York on Saturday, injuring 29 people just hours after a separate explosive detonated during a charity race Saturday in Seaside Park, N.J.

The FBI says it did not find links to extremism during its past investigation of Rahami.
