‘Daily Show’ blasts Fox News over Chinatown segment
Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” responded Thursday to a Fox News “on the street” segment that was widely condemned for mocking Chinese-Americans.
{mosads}During the Fox segment, which came during an episode of “The O’Reilly Factor,” correspondent Jesse Watters interviewed people in New York City’s Chinatown, asking them about the election, if they know karate and whether it’s the “year of the dragon” or the rabbit.
“No, it’s actually the year of ‘go f–k yourself,’ ” responded “Daily Show” correspondent Ronny Chieng on Thursday.
“Where the f–k did this come from?” Chieng added. “I mean, everybody’s been wondering who’d be the target of 2016’s worst racism. I didn’t even know Asians were in the running.”
Watters’s segment was widely denounced by journalists, politicians and activist groups as racist and condescending.
In the video, Watters mocked those that were approached who couldn’t speak English and chided one woman who said she planned on voting for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton by responding, “So China can keep ripping us off?”
“It’s easy to make fun of someone when they can’t respond,” Chieng said Thursday, addressing Watters. “Here, I’ll show you. Hey, douchebag, why do you look like a guy who carries around a pack of roofies just in case?”
On Wednesday, Watters responded to the backlash by apologizing on Twitter, saying the “segment was intended to be a light piece.”
As a political humorist, the Chinatown segment was intended to be a light piece, as all Watters World segments are.

My man-on-the-street interviews are meant to be taken as tongue-in-cheek and I regret if anyone found offense.
