ISIS attacks Iraqi city of Kirkuk

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) on Friday launched an attack on the city Kirkuk in norther Iraq, according to a report by The Associated Press.

{mosads}At least 13 people are reported dead, including four Iranians, after three ISIS fighters stormed a power plant north of the city. The attackers blew themselves up as the police arrived at the scene.
 
ISIS militants also conducted operations targeting government buildings and provincial headquarters within the Kirkuk.
 
A witness told the AP that the city was hit by multiple gun battles and explosions throughout the day. Local television stations also aired footage of the city, with sounds of automatic gun fire and explosions on the background.
 
According to the report, the militants were unable to take control of the government buildings in the city.
 
The total number of casualties in Kirkuk is currently unknown.
 
The attack comes as Iraqi forces have begun an advance on Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq, which has been an ISIS stronghold. ISIS captured the city in the summer of 2014.
