The Georgia lawmaker went on to say that his daughters and daughter-in-law “all work … but they’re still there as moms.”

“And when they come home and take over that responsibility, they need a shared partner, and that partner is that partner for life. And I’m talking about, of course, the father,” he continued.

The remarks come on the heels of controversial comments by Georgia radio host Erick Erickson, who was admonished by Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly over his contention that children “will do best in households where they have a mom at home nurturing them while dad is out bringing home the bacon.”

Gingrey is currently vying for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination to replace retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.).

A Landmark/Rosetta Stone poll released Wednesday showed Gingrey with the lead, pulling 17 percent, good for a narrow advantage over Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) at 15 percent, former Komen foundation executive Karen Handel at 14 percent and Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) at 7 percent.
