UK’s Corbyn: Trump a ‘rich white man’ faking anti-elitism

The leader of United Kingdom’s Labour Party says President-elect Donald Trump is a phony.

{mosads}“The fake anti-elitism of rich white men like Nigel Farage and Donald Trump. It’s farcical at one level, but in reality it’s no joke,” Jeremy Corbyn said during a speech on Saturday, according to the Telegraph.

“We can see the choice taken by politicians on the hard Right — to whip up division against migrants, Muslims, Mexicans, women, LGBT people, people with disabilities,” he added.

Farage, the former leader of the U.K. Independence Party and a key figure in favor of the nation’s decision to leave the European Union, was a vocal Trump supporter during the campaign, and was seen celebrating with the president-elect in Trump Tower after his victory last week.

During his address, Corbyn attacked Trump for being a “climate change denier” and not being committed to fight globalization.

“Politicians and political parties have a choice in this age of understandable cynicism. Do we play on people’s fears and anxieties? Or do we take what might be the more difficult approach: to restore hope?” he said.

“Unlike the next occupant in the White House, we will defend and extend our environmental protections and do everything we can to tackle climate change,” Corbyn later added.

In contrast with the Labour Party leader, U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May congratulated Trump on his victory, and pledged to preserve the “enduring and special relationship” between the two nations.

“I would like to congratulate Donald Trump on being elected the next President of the United States, following a hard-fought campaign,” she said after the election.

“Britain and the United States have an enduring and special relationship based on the values of freedom, democracy and enterprise. We are, and will remain, strong and close partners on trade, security and defence.”
