Rick Perry: Holder showing ‘utter contempt’ for Constitution
{mosads}”Once again, the Obama administration is demonstrating utter contempt for our country’s system of checks and balances, not to mention the U.S. Constitution,” Perry said in a statement.
“This end-run around the Supreme Court undermines the will of the people of Texas, and casts unfair aspersions on our state’s common-sense efforts to preserve the integrity of our elections process.”
Perry’s statement came after Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Justice Department would file a motion later on Thursday requiring Texas to get federal approval before making changes to its voting laws.
The Justice Department motion comes about a month after the Supreme Court struck down portions of the Voting Rights Act concerning pre-clearance requirements for states seeking to change voting laws.
Critics of the ruling say the court’s decision allows states to unfairly block minorities from voting.
