Report: Hillary Clinton didn’t know Abedin would voice support for Weiner
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did not know that her longtime aide Huma Abedin planned to speak publicly in support of her husband, New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, CNN reported Thursday.
Abedin appeared alongside Weiner at a hastily arranged press conference earlier this week, after it was revealed her husband had continued to send sexually explicit pictures and texts to other women, even after resigning from Congress over similar indiscretions.
But according to CNN, Abedin did not consult with Clinton — who herself has grappled with a politician husband publicly straying — before stepping in front of the microphones.
{mosads}”She didn’t know before she saw it on TV,” one source close to Clinton told the network.
“Hillary Clinton was not involved,” another echoed.
Abedin began working as an intern in the White House during President Clinton’s second term and was a top aide to the former first lady during the 2008 campaign. She also worked as a top official in the State Department during Clinton’s tenure there.
During the press conference, Abedin said her husband had “made some terrible mistakes,” but that ultimately, she believed it was in her family’s best interest to stay together.
I do strongly believe that is between us. … We discussed all of this before Anthony decided to run for mayor. … I love him; I have forgiven him; I believe in him … and we are moving forward,” she said.
