Md. mayor quits golf club as members debate admitting Obama

A mayor in Maryland has left an exclusive golf club as its members debate whether to allow President Obama to join.

Jeffrey Slavin, the mayor of Somerset, Md., was a longtime member of the club before he left, The Washington Post reports.

Members of the historically Jewish golf club, the Woodmont Country Club, have debated whether to let Obama in after he chose not to veto the United Nations resolution condemning Israeli settlements, the Post reported.

In an email to the club’s manager obtained by the newspaper, Slavin said he could no longer stay in a community “where intolerance is accepted.”

{mosads}“I can no longer belong to a community: Where Intolerance is accepted, Where History is forgotten, Where Freedom of Speech is denied, And where the nation’s first black president is disrespected,” he wrote in the email.

“Thanks for the many great memories,” he added, telling club members to “Stay Woke.”

The Post reports it is unclear as to whether Obama has voiced a desire to join the club, but he has golfed there in the past.

The Obamas will stay in Washington, D.C., after President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Friday. They plan to stay in the nation’s capital until their younger daughter Sasha finishes high school.
