Perez: Dems should treat Trump like GOP treated Obama

Former Labor Secretary Tom Perez said Tuesday that Democrats should give President Trump as much respect as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) gave President Obama.

Tom Perez, who is running to be the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said that Trump’s policies should be opposed by Democrats unless they are aimed at assisting working class families.

“I think we should give Donald Trump the same respect that Mitch McConnell accorded to Barack Obama … which is not much of anything,” Perez said in an interview with MSNBC.

McConnell led the GOP’s charge to reject Obama’s attempts to fill the late Justice Antonin Scalia’s Supreme Court seat. Scalia passed away in February, and Republican senators refused to hold a hearing or vote on Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland.

{mosads}”[If] you look at the actions of his first four days and it’s been a series of broken promises,” Perez told Rachel Maddow Tuesday, criticizing Trump for not taking steps toward increasing wages or improving standards of living.

During his interview, Perez also reflected on the mistakes of the Democratic Party during the 2016 election, and has urged the party to “go back to basics.”

“We have to go back to basics as a party. We got to make sure that every state has a vibrant party where we are recruiting candidates, where we are organizing as a four-year, 12 months a year enterprise, where we are working side by side,” he said.

“And we lost sight of the basics. Data analytics are fine, and they are important, but they can’t supplant good old fashioned house calls,” Perez added.
