Hillary Clinton aide: ‘No clue’ what Weiner was talking about

A spokesman for Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that her team had “no clue” what former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) was talking about when he suggested that the former secretary of State was already planning a 2016 presidential campaign.

“We have absolutely no clue what he was talking about,” Nick Merrill, a Clinton aide, said in a statement, according to ABC.

{mosads}Merrill’s comment came after Weiner on Monday night said in an interview with BuzzFeed that he knew what role his wife Huma Abedin, a top aide to Clinton, would play in a possible campaign.

“I do know … I’m not going to tell you,” Weiner said.

The disgraced former lawmaker, who is running for New York City mayor, backtracked from those remarks on Tuesday night, saying that he was only joking.

Weiner said Tuesday night that he was joking when he said he knew what role his wife would play in a Hillary Clinton 2016 presidential campaign, according to ABC News.

“Have you ever heard that sometimes people say, ‘Yes, but if I tell you I’d have to kill you?’ It was a joke, everyone laughed, it was a joke,” Weiner said after a mayoral debate, according to ABC.

He added, “I’ll try to make the jokes more obvious.”

Weiner has dropped to fourth place in the polls after revelations that he continued sexting young women after he resigned from Congress for similar behavior. Some have questioned if the scandal could hurt his wife, who is close to the Clintons, and has stood by her husband.

Weiner in the BuzzFeed interview Monday admitted that the scandal had hurt his wife both “personally” and “professionally.”
