German magazine cover shows Trump beheading Statue of Liberty

German magazine Der Spiegel on Friday reacted to President Trump’s immigration executive order, publishing a cover that shows the president having beheaded the Statue of Liberty.

In the cartoon, Trump is seen holding a knife in one hand and the iconic statue’s bloodied head in the other.

The reaction on social media was swift, with some comparing it to a cover of The New Yorker released Friday, showing the flame on the Statue of Liberty’s torch extinguished.

{mosads}The dueling covers of Der Spiegel and The New Yorker appear to play off a Statue of Liberty motif that emerged in the wake of Trump’s executive order temporarily halting the United States’ refugee resettlement program and barring citizens of certain predominantly Muslim countries from entering the U.S.

Shortly after Trump signed the order last week, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) tweeted a photo of the statue, saying, “There are tears running down the cheeks of the Statue of Liberty tonight.”

And over the weekend, The Huffington Post posted an upside down Statue of Liberty on the center of its homepage, with the headline “Discrimination Nation.”

Critics of Trump’s immigration order argue that the move is discriminatory toward Muslims and stands at odds with the country’s background as a nation of immigrants.
