Fox News poll: Almost half of voters favor Gorsuch confirmation

A new Fox News survey found that nearly half of U.S. voters favor the confirmation of President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch.

The new poll released on Wednesday found that 49 percent of the voters would confirm Gorsuch while 37 percent would not. Fourteen percent of those surveyed remained undecided.

The survey also revealed a strong partisan split among voters, with 82 percent of Republicans and only 17 percent of Democrats expressing support for the nominee.

{mosads}According to Fox News 42 percent of voters are in favor of Senate Democrats doing “everything they can” to impede any of the president’s nominees they consider unfit.

The 49 percent support for Gorsuch ranks below the 51 percent approval of President George W. Bush’s nominee John Roberts and the 53 percent support for President Obama’s nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

On the other hand, Gorsuch is considerably more popular than Obama’s 2010 nominee Elena Kagan, who was supported by just 39 percent of thevoters. 

Senate confirmation hearings for Gorsuch are expected to begin next month. He needs 60 votes, meaning support from at least eight Democrats. 

Trump vowed to nominate a judge to carry on the conservative legacy of the late Justice Antonin Scalia, who died a year ago. 

Senate Republicans refused to hold hearings or a vote on President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, arguing that the next president should be able to fill the seat.
