Vandals destroy 100 headstones at Jewish cemetery

Vandals destroyed about 100 headstones at a Jewish cemetery in St. Louis, the latest sign of anti-Semitism amid a wave of bomb threats against Jewish community centers.

Police reported that vandals damaged and destroyed about 100 headstones at the Chesed Shel Emeth Society cemetery, according to CNN. Officers responded to a report about the incident at 8:30 a.m. on Monday.

“Disgusted to hear about the senseless act of desecration at the cemetery in University City. We must fight acts of intolerance and hate,” said Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R) in a tweet Monday evening.

The vandalism comes the same weekend that a host of Jewish community centers received a new wave of bomb threats. At least 11 Jewish community centers received bomb threats on Monday, the JCC Association of North America America reported.

“We will not be cowed by threats intended to disrupt people’s lives or the vital role Jewish community centers play as gathering places, schools, camps, and fitness and recreation centers,” David Posner, director of strategic performance at JCC Association of North America, said in a statement.

{mosads}The White House responded to the bomb threats in a statement.

“Hatred and hate-motivated violence of any kind have no place in a country founded on the promise of individual freedom,” the White House said. “The President has made it abundantly clear that these actions are unacceptable.”

Ivanka Trump, President Trump’s elder daughter, also responded to the threats on Twitter.

“America is a nation built on the principle of religious tolerance,” she tweeted. “We must protect our houses of worship & religious centers.”
