Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) early Wednesday slammed President Trump’s address to Congress, saying it will be “forgotten in a day or two.”
“He’s given a whole lot of speeches, and we’ve seen that the speeches and the reality don’t match,” Schumer told NBC “Today” host Matt Lauer when asked if he could foresee any areas of potential cooperation between Democrats and the White House.
“I’ll say yes, when he comes up with something that really helps working people and says, ‘I want to work with Democrats, here’s my proposal; what’s yours?’”
{mosads}The top Senate Democrat called the speech forgettable, saying it had a “shelf life” and is unlikely to change negative perceptions of his presidency.
“It’s hard to see any place where the president actually has done something for working people. You know, a speech has a shelf life. People forgot his inaugural speech. He had 40 days. Very difficult time, because he’s not governing like his speeches.
“This speech will be forgotten in a day or two. And where’s the action?”
Trump struck a softer town for Tuesday night’s speech, receiving high marks by Republicans and political observers.
