Top GOP super PAC targets Manchin in first 2018 ad

A super PAC with ties to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is targeting Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) in its first ad geared toward the 2018 midterm elections.

Manchin, a moderate Democrat, is among those up for reelection next year being targeted by Republicans, who hope to seize on President Trump’s wave of support in West Virginia in the November election.

The ad, put out by the Senate Leadership Fund, splices together a slew of clips of Manchin voicing support for former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign.

“Don’t be fooled,” a banner at the end of the ad reads, apparently casting doubt on Manchin’s willingness to work with Trump after he was elected.

Manchin has been among the Democratic senators most willing to cooperate with Trump following the bitter campaign, voting to confirm all but four of Trump’s Cabinet nominees that have gone before the Senate.

Manchin is among a handful of Senate Democrats facing potentially difficult reelection battles in red states next year. Sens. Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Claire McCaskill (Mo.) and Joe Donnelly (Ind.) are also considered vulnerable after Trump won heavily in their states.
